The classroom portion of university programs typically focuses on the mastering of general principles that have been established through research in a particular field, and the application of those principles through deductive reasoning. However, once university students move out into employment they will find that skilled workers continue to build their work-related knowledge and skills largely through a process of reflection on practice — usually referred to as experiential learning. One way to smooth the transition from university to the workplace is to introduce various forms of experiential learning into university programs. This presentation will describe how three forms of experiential learning — practica, cooperative education, and community service-learning — are being used at the University of Alberta to improve our graduates’ prospects for success and job satisfaction in the workplace.

This session showcased research posters on topics related to work and learning produced by graduate students in EDPS 545: Learning and the Workplace. Topics included mentoring, diversity in the workplace, and learning cultures. The format included brief presentations by students followed by opportunity for small group discussion.
Title: Regulation of Child Labour in Alberta

Significant numbers of children (9-11) and adolescents (12-14) in Alberta are employed. Many of these children and adolescents work in prohibited occupations and/or face violations of minimum statutory requirements for hours of work, wages, and deductions. The degree of illegal child labour suggests Alberta’s complaint-driven approach to regulation is an inadequate way of enforcing child labour laws.

According to research conducted by the presenters, adults living on the margins of society are not fixated on learning for employment purposes or only on learning to negotiate the basics of daily life. While these are important areas of learning, marginalized adults are motivated to pursue a wide range of learning interests that transcend immediate or economic needs and a strong desire to build community and social relationships through their learning experiences. How might government and institutional policies reflect this reality more effectively?

In the spring of 2009, Chinook’s Edge School Division received funding to explore dual accreditation programming, allowing students to earn credit toward both college and secondary school diploma/certificate requirements. By the end of the project in 2011 a model for dual accreditation will be developed based on learner pathways for Alberta high schools and post-secondary institutions. This model will include recommendations for funding, program structure and delivery, instructional models, infrastructure considerations, and governance. Panelists from the college and school system will present an overview on the project while the presenter from Alberta Education will share the government’s perspective on this model.

What are today's health workforce challenges? This presentation will talk about recent changes in the strategies and approaches to the health workforce, as well as the Government of Alberta's long term plan for ensuring that Alberta has the workforce it needs to delivery health services now and into the future. Topics include the integration of recruitment/retention strategies; reducing demand for workers through productivity initiatives, adoption of technology and reducing injuries; and increasing the supply of workers.
|Title: Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA): Implications for Alberta Teacher Certification

The Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) was established in 1995 to advance the movement of investment, labour, goods, and services throughout Canada. AIT’s Chapter 7, which pertains to labour mobility, was amended, effective April 2009, to promote full labour mobility. The Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) was signed by Alberta and British Columbia governments with an effective date of April 2007 and full implementation April 2009.
With the onset of these agreements, questions arise about the short- and long-term implications for Alberta’s teacher development and certification. Marc Prefontaine, (Alberta Education) and Mark Yurick (Alberta Teachers’ Association) presented their ideas in relation to these agreements and provide certificated teachers and pre-service teachers with information about how these agreements may shape Alberta teachers’ labour mobility and future employment possibilities.
